Why This Was A Monumental Black History Month

New Emojis
This month Apple unveiled a new range of emojis with a more diverse set of characters than ever. This release is supposed to accompany  iOS X 10.10.3 and iOS 8.3 beta 2 to be tested towards the end of this year. However, this update is not without critics. A large number of people, including myself, are questioning why there is an emoji with a yellow complexion as well. Is it supposed to be stereotypically Asian? I would think so. So to Apple I say it's a step in the right direction but when exactly is the last time you saw a yellow person walking down the street? But all in all I think this sparks important conversations about racial inclusion and who exactly is represented in the ideal of diversity in our technologically driven lifestyles.

Another thumbs up for the technological world! Between tumblr, facebook and whatever I else I happen to stumble upon on the internet I've noticed more and more discussions on race and race relations than ever before. People from all different avenues with a wide variety of audiences are stepping up to the plate and really giving this movement what it needs- open discussion. Some of my favorites are here and plenty more are linked on my tumblr here!

Under this same category is one of my personal favorite new shows, The Nightly Show. This month the host, Larry Whilmore, had two discussions involving race; Black Woman in America and Black Fatherhood. These episodes tackle important issues in the black community including wage gaps, stereotyping, and family structure. Issues like this are rarely discussed in the largely middle class white feminist movement and almost never do we hear about black men and their struggles if it doesn't involve police brutality- so tackling issues like this is a the very lease refreshing.

With the #Blackout movement trending on social media sites and Obama's speech in Selma, I think I can safely say that Black History Month is going to stretch far beyond just February this year.

God freakin' Bless.

And of course we thank all of those who worked tirelessly for the civil rights movement. They are the
ones that make every Black History Month something truly remarkable.

  1. YES!!! Totally agree with you. As for the yellow emojis, I'm confused bc they already have Asian emojis that don't look like they have a bad case of jaundice. lol

  2. I agree about the extension of black History month. Here in the UK, I feel a large number of black people embracing their culture as part of life as opposed to just one month in the year.
